Getting Ready for the New Year

If you're wondering what to wear for New Year's Eve - this outfit from NA-KD is a fun option. I paired a slinky black jumpsuit with a cropped lace top - a look that works well for either dressy or casual events.

And let's talk about this adorable pink faux fur jacket...I've been wanting a jacket like this ever since Kate Hudson's stylist dressed me in this outfit - so I was very excited to find this option on the NA-KD site. (Since I plan on wearing it as a shrug, I folded the button strip back and hemmed it to the lining.)

Where to Stay at Beaches Turks and Caicos

We love spending the New Years with friends and family...but it feels SOOO good to briefly escape the snow and head out on a beach holiday.

We just got back from a memorable stay at Beaches Turks and Caicos Resort Villages & Spa. We enjoyed every moment of our trip...from the delicious food to the fun activities and gorgeous sights. There is SO much to share, so I'm dividing the info up over three posts. This post will detail where to stay at Beaches Turks and Caicos, my second post will cover our favourite meals and restaurants at the resort, and the third will feature our favourite activities.

Getting Cozy When it's Cold Outside

You know that type of cold that chills you so deeply that even your bones feel frozen? How do you warm yourself back up? Of course, it's important to prevent yourself from getting too cold in the first place - I always bundle up in warm clothes: cable knit sweaters, warm hats, fleece-lined leggings, high boots - the works!

Sweater: Old Navy (similar) / Skirt: c/o Joe Fresh / Boots:  c/o Nine West (Style AMY) / Hat: Target / Clutch: GAP (similar)

To thaw out, hot drinks and snug blankets are a good starting point...But I don't feel completely "unfrozen" until I've had a hot shower. I know a lot of people love baths in winter, but I prefer showers - there's no need to wait for the tub to fill up, and the hot water creates a mini-steam room around me. And to make the whole experience feel like a treat, I like to use a nourishing shower gel.

How to Style a Rose Quartz Metallic Bomber Jacket

Outerwear trends change a LOT from year to year - from draped trench coats to brightly-coloured moto jackets - there's always something new to try. This season, it's all about the feminine bomber jacket - traditional jackets that have been transformed with jewel-toned fabrics and floral touches. My style is far from sporty, so I wasn't sure if the bomber jacket trend was right for me...and then I fell in love with this Rose Quartz Metallic Bomber Jacket at Jean Machine.

Rose Quartz Metallic Pink Bomber Jacket Distressed Jeans Glitter Clutch Blogger Outfit
Jacket: c/o Jean Machine / Jeans: c/o Jean Machine / Clutch / Shoes / Necklace (similar)

Jean Machine recently invited me to their store to style a head-to-toe winter look. In case you haven't shopped here before - it's basically like a Sephora for jeans. You let the sales associates know what look you're going for - and they'll bring you a variety of jeans across multiple brands to try. I was helped by a senior stylist - and she guessed my correct size just by looking at me (!)...which was perfect - because I always get confused by jean sizing - am I an S, a 25 or a size 4?

Sharing Blogger Goodies

One of the perks of blogging is getting the chance to try a LOT of new items. Since I only feature what I love - if a company offers to send me an item I was going to buy anyway - why not say yes? For example, I've been on the hunt for a cream ruffled-sleeve sweater - so when Chicwish asked me to choose an item from their site - I knew immediately that I wanted to try their Ivory Cable Knit Sweater with Tiered Sleeves. And when Cougar asked me to select some shoes for the winter season, since I had already been looking for tan boots - I requested the suede Iggy Boots.

Gossip Girl Chic...on a Budget

Good Evening Upper East Siders...ok, I may not have much gossip to share - but I do have some insider information on a new-to-Canada clothing brand!

Uniqlo Camel Coat and White Sweater Dress Gossip Girl Inspired Blogger Outfit

Have you ever shopped at Uniqlo before? They recently opened two stores in Canada - one in the Eaton Centre and the other in Yorkdale. Their arrival was highly anticipated, due to their reputation for high quality, affordable basics. Think J.Crew / Club Monaco quality at H&M prices - that's a pretty amazing combo, right?

What to Wear When You're Always Cold...

If there's one thing friends and family know about me - it's that I'm ALWAYS cold. I'm the girl wearing sleeves in the Summer - and winter jackets in the Fall. Maybe it's because I was born in a tropical climate - but I'd rather layer up than risk feeling frozen. Am I the only one, or do you feel the same?

Shopping Haul, Y'all!

When I started blogging, I used to keep all of my clothing purchases in their original bags, so that I could share clothing hauls as they happened. But my latest purchases are all over the place! Some have dedicated blog posts, while others have been shown on Instagram. I've also had some clothing hits and misses that I wanted to share - so I've rounded all my latest purchases in this post. I'd especially recommend scrolling down until the end for some luxe-for-less shoe finds!

Bomber jackets and moto jackets are very popular this season. I've yet to find a bomber jacket that suits me - but I've already stocked up on 2 moto jackets - the pink one above and its twin in black from this post. I prefer wearing my moto jackets open - so I always opt for a shrunken style with fitted shoulders.

Fall Florals with Le Chateau

While I've made it clear how I feel about Fall style  - there is ONE Fall trend I've been loving - Muted Florals. Delicate floral prints are commonly found in Spring and Summer, but this year - I'm excited to see that they have ALSO been adapted for Fall.

So Basic, but So Good...

The good thing about cold weather is that you can hide a lot under cute outerwear. Your sweater can be nearing the end of its wearable life (guilty...) but as long as you're wearing a bright scarf and a well-fitting jacket - nobody will notice!

This week's "Ten Take Fall" Collab asks "What are your must-have/staple items for Fall?"

It seems like most bloggers have a specific uniform for Fall - cozy outerwear, blanket scarves and tall boots. There is some variation - rainboots versus over-the-knee suede boots, moto jacket versus thick cardigans, but the overall look is the same. Sticking to this uniform is a little bit basic but it works for me! Here's a closer look at my choices:

Outlet Shopping & a Mini Makeover

I adore finding deals at the outlets, so I was very excited to collaborate with Toronto Premium Outlets for this post and share my best shopping finds with you!

My first stop was Saks Off 5th - where I spotted this gorgeous pink tweed dress. The silhouette is so classic and timeless - it feels like something Jackie O would have worn. The dress was designed by Nanette Lepore, and I paid $90 (on sale from $188) for this dress.

For my next clothing find, I went from classic to completely distressed! My love for distressed jeans is still going strong - and this pair below from American Eagle Outfitters has lots of rips, yet doesn't show a lot of skin, thanks to its sewn-in patches. It also features custom-cut hems, which are very trendy at the moment - and are perfect for showing off your shoes! My sparkly necklace is also an outlet find - I can never pass up a J.Crew Factory store - their statement necklaces are so well-made. I paid $35 for this tortoise-shell & crystal necklace (the original price was $70).

What to Wear When You DON'T Want to Dress for Fall...

I'm having a hard time getting excited for fall. Bloggers around me seem to be on fast forward -  talking about layering, scarves and Pumpkin-Spice-everything! Meanwhile, I'm firmly in denial...and determined to enjoy every last bit of summer!

Palm Print Jumpsuit & How I Wow My Brows

Hope everyone's had an enjoyable holiday weekend! We spent part of it at the beach with family - and will spend the rest of it getting ready for back-to-school. I wanted to quickly share one of my favourite beach outfits - this palm print jumpsuit - it's so easy to pull on over a swimsuit. The green version has sold out, but this print is still available.

I also wanted to feature a couple of products that I've been testing out over the summer. Benefit released a line-up of 9 new brow products in July - and they have been game changers. There's a product for EVERY thing - from brow volumizing fiber gel to nutrient-rich primers - they even have highlighters for brow hairs!

Shortcuts for Looking Your Best at Events

One of the fun aspects of blogging, is being invited to events. From media previews to fashion shows and gala dinners - there's always something exciting going on. Of course, with so many events to attend (and be photographed at) you'll want to look your best - which is where my tried-and-tested getting ready shortcuts come in. As you know - I'm all about minimal effort for maximum impact - so read on for some fun tips!

  • Practice tricky makeup on "regular" days - I'm now able to draw on winged eyeliner and apply false eyelashes within 10 minutes. These weren't easy skills to learn - so whenever I had a bit of extra time while getting ready, I'd put on false lashes or draw on extra liner. Not only did this speed up my application skills, it also helped me get accustomed to wearing these more dramatic looks.

Meeting a BAWSE

Do you have trouble finding the right top to wear with a flared midi skirt? While crop tops look amazing, they're not something I'm comfortable wearing (A peek of my midriff? No thank you!). This black bodysuit is a fun alternative. It's fitted, so it contrasts nicely with the flared silhouette. And because it's a bodysuit, you don't have to worry about it bunching up at the waist.

The One That Nearly Got Away...

I'm so upset with Joe Fresh - and here's why. FIRST - they design the PERFECT white lace dress...just the right length...with short sleeves...the prettiest lace trimming AND priced at only $49. THEN - they send this dress to various Canadian fashion bloggers - who proceed to share gorgeous outfit pictures on Instagram.

Lemons, Vintage Gucci & Summer Loves

I was talking to some bloggers at a recent party, about all the cute prints we've been seeing recently - from lemons to pineapples and flamingos. We thought we'd left those prints behind in our childhood - yet here we are, tempted to wear them because they're so colourful and fresh!

Top: c/o Romwe (shop the sale) / Jeans: H&M / Bag: Gucci / Shoes: Target (similar) / Earrings: H&M

My lemon-print top is actually an off-the-shoulder design, but we all know how I feel about off-the-shoulder tops, so I wore it with the sleeves up. As for my bag, this was the first designer bag I ever bought. Although I purchased it directly from a Gucci store - it's now over 10 years old - so I guess you could say it's vintage?  I hardly wear it anymore, but after seeing the Dionysus and Blooms bags everywhere, I remembered that I had a Gucci bag (or 3...) of my own in storage!

Are PRADA Baroque Sunglasses Timeless or Trendy?

The Prada Minimal Baroque sunglasses first became popular in 2011. I remember seeing them on other bloggers and thinking that they looked very bold and dramatic. Because the style was so distinctive, I didn't invest in them myself - I thought it was a "trendy" item that would soon look very dated.

And yet, here I am, 5 years late to the party - with my first pair of Prada Baroque sunglasses! And I'm absolutely in love. While the curlicue arms are trendy, the over-sized lenses are classic - and remind me of Jackie O's sunglasses from the 70s.

Pinterest Pink and Pandora

My birthday was earlier this week - and we celebrated with dinner at my favourite restaurant. I feel happiest when I'm wearing cream and pink - so of course, my birthday outfit had to feature both of these colours!

Pink Tropical Print Midi Skirt Romwe Zara Blogger Outfit

I picked out this skirt because I loved the tropical print and the midi length...but when it came to styling it - I had no idea what to pair it with. It is not as voluminous as my other midi skirt, so I knew that I needed a simpler top. When in doubt - Pinterest ALWAYS comes to the rescue - and this outfit gave me the inspiration I needed. I mean, Olivia Palermo knows how to make ANYTHING look good - so I copied her cream blouse + tan belt + pink skirt formula!

Pink Opal and Blooming Dahlia Pandora Ring Pink Murano Glass Bead and Pave Lights Bead

Here's a peek at some of my birthday goodies - I went to the Pandora store and picked out two rings and two charms. I chose the October birthstone ring because it's a pink opal and MUCH cuter than the July ring. I also loved this delicate icy pink ring from the "Blooming Dahlia" range. For my charms - I added the Pink Fascinating Murano Glass Bead and the Pink Pave Lights Bead. I love these pieces because I can wear them all the time - and whenever I look down at them, they make me happy!

Has Pinterest ever helped you solve a styling dilemna?

What to Wear to a Garden Party + $500 Shopping Spree Giveaway!

Summer is the season for outdoor parties - and what could be more fun than a Garden Party? I recently collaborated with Mapleview Centre and four of my favourite bloggers on a Garden Party themed photoshoot.

(Items c/o Mapleview Centre) Dress: Free People / Clutch: Aldo / Floral Crown (+DIY): Forever21 (similar)
The first part of our project was figuring out what to wear to a Garden Party. We wanted our outfits to coordinate, so we focused on a blush pink/cream/lace colour palette. Luckily there were many pretty options to choose from at Mapleview Centre. I started with my usual favourites (ZARA, H&M and Forever 21) but also visited stores that I don't usually shop at. This turned out to be SUCH a good idea, because I found this Free People lace dress on clearance at The Bay. Its regular price is CAD$232 - but I paid $92!!! My ALDO bag is a bejeweled minaudiere from their bridal party selection. ALDO came out with a similar clutch a couple of years ago, but it sold out quickly, so I was very happy to have snapped it up this time around. For my floral crown, I used a base from Forever21 and modified it by adding in some extra flowers.

I love how all our outfits were similar but not identical - with each reflecting our individual styles. To see where my fellow Garden Party Bloggers found their outfits - click through to their blog posts ( The Minted Mama / Renee M. LeBlanc / Sparkle Shiny Love / Nelle Creations ).

Our photoshoot took place at a park in Burlington - we had so much fun working together! Candace brought along her grandmother's vintage tea cups to use as props - and now I'm inspired to start my own tea cup collection!

One of the best parts of this Garden Party collaboration is the amazing prize we'll be giving away! One lucky reader will win a $500 Mapleview giftcard AND a stylist session with the Garden Party blogger of their choice. To enter this giveaway, click through below. Good Luck!

Off-the-Shoulder versus Cold Shoulder

This summer's style has been ALL about revealing your shoulder - whether you go totally off-the-shoulder, or you play it safe by showing just a peek in a cold-shoulder top.

Blogger Outfit Floral Black Pants
Top / Pants (similar) / Sandals (similar) / Bag (similar) / Sunglasses (similar)

While I LOVE the look of off-the-shoulder tops - I personally find them difficult to wear. Firstly - you have to wear a strapless bra - which I ALWAYS find SO uncomfortable. Secondly, any time you raise your arms, your off-the-shoulder top creeps up, and you have to constantly readjust it. But perhaps I'm doing something wrong - as I've seen so many bloggers wearing gorgeous off-the-shoulder tops and dresses!

Whether you're looking for a cold-shoulder or off-the-shoulder top - I've spotted lots of cute options at ZARA and Forever21. I found this pretty blue top at ZARA - and it's currently on EVEN further discount thanks to their SUMMER SALE! It's sold out in most sizes online, but you could probably still find it in store.

My Current Skincare Routine for Acne-Prone Skin

Longtime readers of this blog know ALL about my skincare struggles (previous posts from 2011, 2013 and 2015). My last acne episode was my worst to date - with 3 separate doctors/dermatologists pushing me to go on Accutane. I chose not to go on medication, opting for self-treatment instead, and while I still break out, when I compare my skin to where it was 2 years ago, I'm very happy.

Lace Off-the-Shoulder top blogger outfit
c/o Top (worn over a lace cami) / Jeans / Sandals (similar) / Bag

I've picked up SO many tips from reading message boards and blog posts - and I want to share everything that has helped me. But when it comes to writing it all down - I keep putting it off, because there is TOO much information! So I've decided to split this topic up into 3 parts:
  • My Current Skincare Routine
  • What I Did to Avoid Accutane
  • How I Cover my Acne with Makeup (since my friends had no idea about the state of my skin - and were surprised to see what I was covering under my makeup!)
I'll link in the future posts as I write them - but for now, let's get started with my skincare:

Skincare Routine for Acne-Prone Skin

Skincare Routine for Acne-Prone Skin
Skincare Routine for Acne-Prone Skin

  • These products are tried and tested on my sensitive skin - I've been using them for at least 2 years if not longer.
  • Although Salicylic Acid and Benzoyl Peroxide are commonly used to treat acne, they don't suit my skin. So for bacteria fighting and spot-healing purposes, I use the Tria Blue Light device and Retin-A.
  • I've recently added Pond's Cold Cream as an eye-makeup remover - and it's the most effective and gentle remover I've ever tried. I mix a dime-size amount with a splash of warm water and apply it over my eyes. It instantly melts off my mascara and liner. I then take a wet cotton pad and wipe off the Pond's. This technique keeps my eye area hydrated, prevents unnecessary tugging of skin and keeps my lashes healthy.
  • I use Rosehip oil at night for added moisture, and also because it has anti-aging and scar-repairing properties. I've previously tried using Jojoba oil, but it broke me out. I read many reviews of different Rosehip oils and chose Kosmea because it's cold-pressed and organic.
  • I love using the Kiehls Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleanser as a mask. I apply it in the shower and let it sit for 10 minutes, so that the Amazonian White Clay can clean out my pores. I use circular motions to remove the mask - allowing the ground Oat Kernels to lightly exfoliate my skin. My skin always feels so soothed and clarified after using this!
Hope you found this post useful - do you have any must-have skincare products?

Accessorizing with MINT

It's funny how an Instagram picture can lead to a fun collaboration! As I was leaving last month's Style Pop event, I walked by the cutest store display at Mint Accessories. Of course I had to stop and take this pic to share on Instagram. A couple of days later, the store contacted me and asked if I wanted to work with them!

Peach pleated midi skirt grey bucket bag blogger outfit
Shirt / c/o Skirt / Shoes (similar) / Bag c/o MINT / Necklace c/o MINT
Wearing AND sharing cute accessories? My answer was a resounding YES! I headed to the MINT store at Bramalea City Centre to pick out 3 items...AND I got doubles - so that one of my Canadian followers could win my picks too!

How cheerful and pretty is this store? It totally feels like my happy place - I love the mint-coloured walls and the crystal chandelier.

All of their items are carefully curated and so trendy yet reasonably priced. I loved this wall of bags and scarves - it was very hard to choose which 3 items to take home!

I knew I wanted a mini-bag for summer - but I couldn't decide which was cuter - the grey bucket bag or the fringed white bag. Which would you have picked?

Peach pleated midi skirt grey bucket bag blogger outfit

In the end, I opted for the grey bag because it came with a cross-body strap. I figured that the grey would work with both summer pastels and winter clothing too. I also picked out the daintiest lace infinity scarf (I'm wearing it in the in-store pic) and a chic grey and white crystal necklace.

Here's a close up of the three items - Charcoal Bucket Shoulder Bag (regularly priced $54 but on sale for $19), Lace Infinity Scalloped Edge Scarf ($19) and Jewel Statement Necklace ($19). If you have a Canadian mailing address and would like to win this, just follow the 3 steps below:

1) Follow @ellaprettyblog on Instagram
2) Follow @mint_accessories on Instagram
3) Comment "I follow both" under this picture

Good luck! Winner will be announced here on June 23rd. UPDATE: Winner is @chels19xo

Uncharacteristic Clothing Purchases

When it comes to buying clothing, I usually stick to cream/lace/denim. But recently, I've been straying from my classic choices. Baggy floral pants, a super-flouncy sleeved top and a caftan (!!!) - my latest purchases are all over the place! There is one common theme though - each piece is featherlight and addictively soft.

And here is my super-flouncy blouse - every time I'd go to H&M, I'd try this on, decide that the sleeves were too fussy, and leave without it. After trying it on for the THIRD time, I decided to ignore my practical side and just embrace the flounces!

H&M have an identical one that I plan to try on in store soon. By the way - if you're interested in winning this pink bag - don't forget to enter here.

Styling Outfits for Spring

One of my favourite parts of fashion blogging is experimenting with clothes and putting together different outfit combinations. While this is usually done in the comfort of my own closet, I recently had the opportunity to style outfits in front of a LIVE audience!

Dress / Necklace (old from F21, similar) / Shoes (old from Target, similar) / c/o Bag

I worked with Bramalea City Center on their Spring Style Pop Party, where me and my fellow Style Squad members were given 15 minutes to present 3 Spring Trends - Romantic, Boho and Nautical. Styling under pressure was definitely an intense experience - we were in the middle of the mall with an audience watching us! But because it was doing something I LOVE, I enjoyed every moment of it.

Here are the looks I came up with: lots of blush pink and lace for the romantic look, patterns, layers and tassels for the boho look, and a tailoured navy and white outfit with a pop of red for the nautical look. It was interesting to see how we ALL put our own unique spins on the 3 trends - view all three of the outfits here.

I wore this lace dress to the event - I SO wish it came in white - it would be PERFECT for summer! The lace overlay design reminds me of the famous Self-Portrait Layered Dress (by the way - how dreamy is the Azaelea Dress? WANT!) Since I was wearing black during a day time event, I lightened up the effect by pairing it with blush pink accessories.

This pink bag is inspired by the Chloe Drew bag, and was sent to me by Romwe. It's a great option if you're looking for a fun summer bag, as it's only $24.99. Romwe is offering one of my readers a $50 giftcard - just register on their website, like their FB page and comment with your email address below - I'll be picking the winner on May 30. Alternatively, you can use code "RW-ellaprettyblog60" for 60% off your order.

UPDATE: Winner is Laurie W

If you plan on ordering, please keep in mind that their items ship from China - so shipping can take up to a month. Also - depending on your order size/where you live you might have to pay duty (that's happened to me 1/10th of the time, but I wanted to mention it.) In all honesty, items can be hit or miss depending on sizing/quality etc, so I can't speak for ALL the items on the site, but here are some pieces that I've tried, tested and found similar in quality to H&M, ZARA etc. (Black Midi Skirt, Floral Midi Skirt, Pink Bag, White Lace Blouse). And definitely use a measuring tape to make sure you're ordering the right size!

What is your favourite type of dress for summer? Mine is of course LACE! I'm on the hunt for a white midi length one!
