My Top 6 Tips: How to Layer Button Downs with Sweaters & How to Wear Scarves

As someone who hates being cold, you'll often find me layering sweaters and/or wearing a scarf.

In the comments section of previous outfit posts (1, 2), I've been asked for my top tips on layering sweaters and wearing scarves - so I thought I'd combine my answers into one post for easy reference.

Like everybody else these days, I get all my good styling ideas from Pinterest and other blogs! In particular, these tutorials on wearing scarves and rolling sleeves have had a major impact on my outfits.

Shirt: H&M (similar), Sweater: Old Navy (similar) / Shirt: Old Navy, Sweater: Old Navy / Shirt: H&M (similar), Sweater: Old Navy (similar, similar but $$$)

1) Choosing a sweater - the best layering sweater is one that is slightly thicker (you don't want the see the underlying buttons poke through the top) and not too long (so that you can see the hem of the button down peek out from underneath)

2) Choosing a shirt - you can get away with nearly any button down underneath a thicker sweater (like the plaid shirt with the cable knit sweater in my picture above), but for thinner sweaters, you'll want to choose something light and delicate. You could even opt for a chiffon-like shirt like this.

3) Rolling your sleeves - one of the key steps to getting that J.Crew layered-look is scrunching up your sweater sleeves near your elbow, bringing the cuff up over the sweater, and neatly rolling the shirt up to the cuff (picture tutorial here). This step highlights the two fabrics without adding bulkiness to your sleeves.

Scarf: Old Navy (similar), Sweater: Old Navy / Scarf: Forever21 (adore this option!), Sweater: Garage / Scarf: Express, Shirt: Garage (similar)

4) Rectangle scarf - pick the scarf up by the corner, wrap it loosely around your neck once and adjust the ends so that they hang down evenly.  Holding the scarf by the corner results in tapered ends, which looks much nicer than squared-off ends.

5) Square scarf - fold the scarf diagonally in half, so that you're left with one large triangle. Take the two ends of the triangle and place it around your neck - as if you were putting on a giant bib (!!!) Tuck the ends in at your nape and bring them down to hang on each side of your 'bib'! (Alternatively, instead of tucking, bring the ends round the front and tie them in a knot under the 'bib' - shown here)

6) Infinity scarf - the easiest scarf to wear - especially if they're extra fluffy like these Express scarves! You can either loop them evenly twice around your neck (so that it hangs down like one giant necklace like this) or loop them three times (as seen above) to get a more voluminous look.

So there you have it - my top 6 tips - I hope you found them helpful! And thank you again to everyone who takes the time to comment on my blog - please feel free to leave any tutorial requests below ♥♥♥

Blogger Shopping Date & Feeling Nautical

Elaine and I met up at Square One last week for a shopping date. Shopping with a blogger friend is LOTS of fun...but can also lead to situations such as this:

CHANGING ROOM TWINS !?! But seriously, how can you resist a polka dot chambray shirt? Especially when it's on sale for only $19!

Here's a closer look at the shirt - I love it - gorgeous material and the perfect length to wear tucked in or loose. I plan on wearing it with a pencil skirt and black tights.

blazer / polka-dot / white print / anchor

Some of the other shirts I tried on at Old Navy - definitely feeling the nautical theme. Oh...and I might have ordered the striped blazer online, after it went on sale...

I also fell in love with the look of this pleather trimmed moto jacket from H&M. However, I'm not sure if it's a keeper - it has a high wool content (too warm) and feels a bit scratchy when you wear it. But the cut and fit is amazing...what should I do?

Coach Waverly Mini Skinny

My last purchase of the day was this sparkly coin purse from Coach - I love coated canvas products - they look new even after frequent use.

Shopping OOTD:

Sweater: Old Navy, Scarf: Express, Shirt: H&M, Jeans: Garage, Boots: Old Navy (similar)

Breakfast with Biotherm #StayHomeAndHydrate

I got the early train on Friday morning and headed downtown for Biotherm's Valentine's Day Breakfast, held in Cruda Cafe at the St. Lawrence Market.

I had a lovely time catching up with blog friends while enjoying freshly squeezed juice and mini-fruit jars. (With Jenny from Crazy Style Love and Elaine from Toronto BeautyReviews)

The event was held to commemorate Biotherm's Valentine's Day collaboration with artist Olivia Mew - she designed a not-so-typical yet oh-so-practical range of cards for Biotherm (see the "tu sens bon" card next to my coffee cup in the first picture - isn't it gorgeous?) Available at Biotherm counters, each card comes with a his or hers skincare sample! She also spent Valentine's Day creating personalized illustrations for lucky customers at the Hudson Bay on Queen Street. I had such a fun time chatting with Olivia at the breakfast about our mutual love of England. She promised to create a drawing for me - I'll be sure to add it here when I get it!

Biotherm is a luxury skincare brand owned by L'Oreal. Its products are inspired by the healing powers of thermal water. The Aquasource line uses nutrient-rich plankton and sugar-based Mannose to provide ultimate hydration benefits to the skin.

Leighton Meester has recently been signed as Biotherm's Global Ambassador. I think she's the perfect choice - you couldn't pick a better face for luxurious skincare than Gossip Girl's Blair Waldorf!

As we left the event, we were gifted with Biotherm tote bags designed by Olivia Mew. They contained Biotherm's original star product - Aquasource gel, as well as the Deep Serum and Night Jelly. Will definitely update on how these products work out for me.

If you'd like to see more of Olivia Mew's work, check out her website here.

Have you tried Biotherm products before? Don't you love Olivia Mew's artwork?

(UPDATE: Ta da - here's the illustration Olivia did of me - she is AWESOME!!!)

Navy & White plus Valentine's Day Gift Ideas

I hadn't realized that I owned so many navy and white pieces, but looking at my outfits from the past week, I definitely notice a trend!

Sweater: Old Navy (similar), Necklace: H&M (similar), Jeans: GAP, Shoes: Old Navy (similar)

Lots of Old Navy going on in this outfit (sweater & booties) - I bought this wrap sweater over 2 years ago and it's held up well so far.

Top: J.Crew, Necklace: J.Crew (similar), Jeans: Garage, Boots: Hunter, Bag: LV Neverfull PM

Loving my J.Crew Factory striped t-shirt. As much as I love Old Navy, I find that J.Crew Factory usually has better quality - and if you wait for the right 40% off sale - you can end up paying Old Navy prices for their pieces. I'll always be a fan of Old Navy though - especially for their thicker sweaters & shoes.

Top: Garage (similar), Necklace: J.Crew, Jeans: Garage (this year's version), Boots: Old Navy (similar), Bag: LV Neverfull PM

I chose this outfit after I got tired of wearing dark denim all the time in this cold weather. It was fun wearing winter whites - who knew that white jeans would work with tan boots?

1. Kate Spade / 2. Pandora / 3. Jo Malone / 4. TOMS / 5. Coach

By the way, if you're looking for Valentine's Day Gift ideas, head over to my YMC post to see why I love these 5 pieces!

Do you wear a lot of navy and white?

Put a Bow on it...

I've been on the lookout for black heels - although I adore my black studded ZARA heels, they're half a size too big (I must have gotten confused by the European sizing!) I spotted this sweet pair by Nine West at my local Winners - I love the bow design PLUS they're comfortable too...I guess it was meant to be.

Not available online but you may find them at Winners/TJ Maxx/Marshalls (love these quilted and slingback versions)

Recent Outfits:

I've been admiring this pink & camel polka dot Land's End sweater (have you seen their catalogue recently? Very J.Crew-like!) I decided to recreate the combination with items I already owned:

Shirt: H&M, Sweater: Old Navy (similar), Necklace: J.Crew Factory, Jeans: Garage, Booties: Old Navy (similar)

I wore this for a friend's birthday lunch - it was too cold to wear anything fancy!

Shirt: Forever21, Scarf: Express, Bag: Balenciaga, Jeans: Garage, Boots: Old Navy (this year's version)

I love the look of plaid paired with cable knit...or plaid with ANYTHING to be honest! I'm such a fan of plaid this season!

Shirt: Old Navy, Sweater: Old Navy, Necklace: Forever21, Jeans: Garage, Booties: Old Navy (similar)

By the way, if you're looking for outfit inspiration for Valentine's Day, be sure to check out my YMC post here:

Sweater: Express, Clutch: Michael Kors, Dress: ASOS, Crystal Necklace: Le Chateau, Clutch: Guess, Heels: ALDO

Do you like shoes with bows on them? What will you be wearing on Valentine's Day?
