What's for Dinner and shopping...

Here's what I made for dinner last night: slow-cooker chicken soup with home-made noodles. The noodles were surprisingly easy (eggs, flour, salt, water - kneaded and rolled out, then cut up into little sticks and boiled in salt water). It was really yummy - and I look forward to having the leftovers today - chicken soup is yummier on the second day!

My Valentine's present/Coach bag arrived - and I love it. The leather is soft, and the different pink shades are beautiful. I can't wait to start using it.

I also received my order. I love using Burts Bees products, but most stores (Shoppers Drug Mart, Loblaws, Walmart) only carry a limited range of items - so I have to go online to get the items I need. On the right are 3 new Burts Bees products that I'm trying - their Radiance face wash and serum, and their Volumising shampoo. I also purchased a Kiss My Face Volumising shampoo, as I read that it is good to alternate shampoos. I've never tried Kiss My Face products before - I chose it because it is also sulfate-free. On the left are the raw ingredients for my detox bath salts. I found the recipe online - you use sea salts, Epsom salts, baking soda, glycerin and essential oils. It is lovely to customise your bath experience - and I always feel refreshed after using this mix. I bought Rose Otto, Lavender and Rosemary Essential Oils.

Wow - this is turning in to a long post - guess I have a lot of catching up to do! I trudged through the snow on Tuesday to go to the mall - I desperately needed some retail therapy. I picked up a maxi dress from Old Navy, a yoga outfit and this sweater. The girly style reminds me of J Crew's look from last season - and the colour (a peachy/salmony pink) is very cheerful and flattering.

I also bought these gladiator sandals from Payless - I love the studs and black crystals. I think these would look great with skinny jeans...when spring finally gets here!

Product Review: C.O. Bigelow Mentha Lip Buffer Gentle Formula

C.O. Bigelow's Mentha Lip Shine (found at Bath & Bodyworks) is a well-loved product, so I was eager to try out the lip buffer from this line. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed.

Usage: This product is meant to exfoliate your lips using sugar crystals suspended in a peppermint lip balm
Comparables: Other popular lip exfoliating products include Fresh Sugar Lip Scrub and LUSH Lip Scrubs - I've read good reviews of both but haven't tried them yet.
Price: $7.50 USD at
My experience: My lips tend to get a bit flaky in the winter time - nothing too extreme, as my Burts Bees Honey Lip balm works pretty well. Still - I need to exfoliate before I apply lip colour and gloss - and I was hoping that this would be a quick and easy way to get my lips moisturised and smooth.
I squeezed some product onto my lips, and used my fingers to spread it in small circular motions. I did this carefully and with a good amount of pressure. I then used a washcloth to remove the product. I looked at my lips - and the flakes were still there! I repeated the whole process, hoping for better results - but no dice. In the end, I used a soft toothbrush, and gently scrubbed my lips - the flakes were gone...but this was no surprise - as this is my usual lip exfoliation procedure (Vaseline and a baby soft toothbrush reserved just for my lips).
All in all this product was a complete waste of money. I have kept using this (with my toothbrush) - just to finish it, but it irks me to know that plain old Vaseline would do the job better, and I wouldn't need to wipe the sugar crystals off with a washcloth. My sister purchased this product at the same time, and was equally disappointed.
Would I buy it again: Definitely not, although I may still try out their famous Mentha Lip Shine.
Disclaimer: I purchased this product myself, and was not paid to review it.

HK necklace and MAC shopping

My Hello Kitty necklace that I posted about here has finally arrived. It is very well-made - I'm impressed by the packaging and the workmanship. I think I'm going to wear it without the little flower charm, as it looks a bit too teeny-boppy on me otherwise. This was an impulse buy - I usually prefer timeless and elegant accessories - and I may end up saving it for my daughter. But for now, it makes me happy to look down and see my HK pendant - she's so cute and I love her pink bow!

This past Friday I went to MAC and picked up some items that had been on my wishlist for a while. I've updated my MAC collection list here. I bought 2 lipsticks - Angel and Creme d'Nude. Creme d'Nude is the exact shade as Myth, but is creamy rather than drying. To be honest, I didn't need it - I mainly bought it because it usually sells out so quickly, and the store finally had it in stock. It is a lipstick that I'll have to layer with a rosier colour - it doesn't look good on me straight out of the tube.

Angel (pictured on me above) is a beautiful pink-ish shade. It's pretty popular because it's Kim Kardashian's favourite lipstick. I am totally in love with this colour - especially when layered over MAC Spice lip pencil. The lipstick is pretty long-lasting - but applying it over the lip liner makes it stay even longer.

I also picked up 2 eyeshadow brushes - 239 and 217. I asked people to recommend their favourite MAC brushes to me - and these 2 were the most popular. The 239 is good for applyinig colour on the lid, and the 217 is good for blending. Previously, I'd been using gift-with-purchase Lancome brushes and Revlon brushes - and let me tell you- it makes SUCH a difference using these MAC brushes. Colours go on richly and's so true that make up application is better when you have the right tools!

Style Icon: Audrey Hepburn

I just finished reading Audrey Style by Pamela Clarke Keogh.

I've loved Audrey Hepburn (who doesn't?) ever since I watched Breakfast at Tiffany's in high school. She carried herself with grace and had an innate sense of style.
This book is full of gorgeous pictures featuring Audrey in film stills as well as in candid photographs. One photograph I loved was Audrey with her Speedy 25 (the pic on the right is similar to the one in the book). With the abundance of Speedy bags everywhere - it is refreshing to see that it is a classic. And it is fun to know that I have the same bag she did :-)

Here are some interesting facts I learned about Audrey from the book:
-She was trained as a ballerina - which resulted in her perfect posture.
-She was very gracious and had beautiful manners.
-She would only focus on one task at a time, and put all her effort into that one task.
-She had a strong interest in fashion, and was very aware of her own body-type. She knew what type of clothes highlighted her delicate proportions, and only wore clothes that met her exacting standards.
-She was active throughout her life, and loved going for long walks everyday. She would get a massage 3 times a week and eat simple healthy foods.
-She had a very basic beauty routine. She used Erno Laszlo skin products and Philip Kingsley shampoo.
-For make-up, she focused on her eyes - and favoured minimal foundation and pale pink lips.
-During films, her personal make-up artist would apply foundation, set it with powder, brush away the excess and spray her face with Evian, blotting after 2 minutes. This trick gave her a gorgeous glow.

This book is great for light reading. The anecdotes from people in Audrey's life made the book interesting. However, I found the book to be a little unstructured and repetitive. I would like to own a picture book of Audrey someday, but I think that there are better ones out there. I'd definitely recommend checking it out from the library (like I did)!

Perfect Valentine's Day Gift!

Here's a pic of what hubby is getting me for Valentine's Day. A Kristin Colorblock Shoulder Flap in pink (Style No: 14221). I'm so excited!!!

I was feeling a little guilty about getting this, as I had just gotten the LV Speedy 25. But I knew I'd regret not buying this - it is *so* me. I adore pink - and love the 3 different shades of pink used in this bag - it stops it from looking too saccharine-sweet. Size-wise, I read somewhere that this is supposed to be similar to a Chanel jumbo flap bag. I actually prefer smaller bags, but this was the only style that used the Colorblock pink material.

It's being shipped over from the US, so will update with new pics once it gets here. I still can't believe it's mine!!!

What's for Dinner?

Still on the Korean cuisine kick - tonight I modified a Korean Spicy Pork recipe - and used chicken instead. I also made Zucchini pancakes with dipping sauce. It was also yummy - I felt like we had gotten takeout - but it was all home-made - and really simple too. Recipes can be viewed here.

What's for Dinner?

I made this for dinner the other night - it doesn't look that pretty - but it was definitely yummy!
On the left is Beef Bulgogi - I used the marinade I posted about here, but added some extra soy sauce, sesame seeds and onions. On the top right is Korean-style Fried Zucchini. I learned how to cook it from a fantastic YouTube chef - here's the video - and be sure to check out her other recipes. I want to try the Zucchini Fritters next! On the bottom left is some sliced eggplant - I tried grilling it, but it took too long, so I ended up frying it as well. I served these dishes with white basmati rice.

Hair Journey 2010 - I want thicker hair!

This year I'd like to focus on getting my hair in shape. I feel blessed - I have brownish/black silky hair. It grows fairly quickly, and is easy to maintain. It covers my scalp - there is no patchiness or thinning. However, I'd like my hair to be the healthiest that it can be - and will focus on using products - both internally and externally, to see if I can grow *more* hair. To clarify - I'm not focusing on length or thickness of hair strands, but on new hair growth.

-Nourkrin - marine extract supplements and hair serum - I used this for 2 years, and didn't really notice a difference

-Biosil - silicone extract to help with hair growth - took this for 6 months - my nails are stronger, but my hair isn't any thicker - now that I've finished 3 bottles, I'm going to switch to a different supplement
-Omega 3-6-9 supplement - this includes cod liver oil, evening primrose oil and olive oil
-Castor Oil - I apply Black Castor Oil on my roots overnight, twice a week
-Coconut Oil - I apply cold-processed coconut oil on my hair and scalp for 6+ hours, once a week
-Boar Bristle Brush - I brush my hair everyday with a boar bristle brush - to massage my scalp
-Limited styling - I wash my hair twice a week, and use heated styling tools sparingly (maybe 10 times a year). Part of this is to protect my hair, but part of it is because I honestly *dislike* blow-drying my hair - too much effort for very little result.

PRODUCTS THAT I WILL TRY IN THE FUTURE: I will not be trying them all at once! I am researching their effectiveness, and will introduce them in gradually, so that I can see what is working and what isn't. Products with (**) are the ones I will try first. It can take up to 6 months to see a difference, especially with internal supplements.

-Supplements: (Please consult with your doctor before taking any supplements - and DO NOT take them all at once, as they have overlapping ingredients.)
-GNC Ultra Nourishair**
-GNC Hair, Skin & Nails
-MSM with vitamin C
-Hair Pills by California Naturals
-Rexall Hair Skin and Nails

-External Products:
-Rosemary and Lavender essential oils massaged onto scalp**
-Salt massaged into damp scalp, left on for 5 minutes before shampoo

-Shampooing my hair more frequently. I thought I was protecting my hair by only washing it twice a week, but in some cases, toxins can build up on the scalp - which inhibits hair growth.
-Daily scalp massage**

Do you have any products or tips that have worked for you? Please leave me a comment, and I'll add it to this list!

Do my eyelashes seem longer?

Do my eyelashes seem any longer?
YES, there is BIG difference
YES, there is a SMALL difference
NO, there is NO change
NO, they have gotten SHORTER! free polls

It has been 2 months since I started applying Castor Oil on my eyelashes (posts about it here and here). I find it really hard to quantify the difference - so please answer my poll and let me know what you see!

Here's my opinion - after squinting at this comparison pic for ages! I think my eyelashes may have been slightly thicker before, but they are now a *tiny* bit longer, especially the inner and outer lashes.

Hello Kitty

I just realised I hadn't gotten around to posting the Hello Kitty items I've purchased recently. I've always loved Hello Kitty products because it cheers me up to see her cute little face - and it reminds me of my childhood. I wish I had purchased the Hello Kitty/MAC make up bag when it came out - may have to look on ebay to see if I can still get one.

I got these stamps and pencil sharpener in a gift shop at the Eaton Center. The heart shaped stamps have holographic stickers on them - that is why they look blurry in the photo.

I picked up this backpack at a random toy shop - this is for my daughter - it's the perfect size for a toddler!

This is an old McDonald's happy meal toy I had lying around- it's Hello Kitty's boyfriend "Dear Daniel".

Oh...and after writing this post, I decided to do some web shopping - and ended up with this cute necklace from QVC. I needed some retail therapy...I feel much better now :-) I've never ordered from QVC before - but their HK items look well-made. Can't wait to get my pendant!

Do you own any Hello Kitty products?
